Reflections – January

08.01.23

January is a funny old month with the festivities of the December gradually fading, the days begin to get lighter – minute by day – meaning it can be a month where motivation is difficult to come by. I know I find myself to be more irritable and pessimistic.

So far 2023 been dogged by rainy days, which neither make for good walking, nor anything else outdoors for that matter. It has however, enabled me to turn my hand to reading more. I’ve been particularly fond of mountaineering and climbing books, enjoying both In To Thin Air by John Krakauer and Touching the Void by Joe Simpson. These are excellent accounts of perseverance and determination in the most difficult circumstances, in particular the latter.

In 2022 my focus shifted to work, with a new job seemingly dominating my life, however having now somewhat settled in that aspect of my life, I can turn my attention and focus elsewhere. I hope to use this blog more regularly as a creative outlet alongside recording more videos for my YouTube channel. It’s something that is different to my day to day work, brings me a new challenge and leaves me with digital windows looking back on my memories. I’m also looking forward to turning my hand to some camping and re-acquainting myself with the paddle board.

I’m hoping the rest of January brings fair weather, I can accept cold crips mornings provided they are dry. I’ve set my self a number of personal goals that are a continuation really of those I’ve had this past year. Continuing working on my weight loss and getting out into the hills more, thankfully the two go hand in hand which means they are easier to be accountable for.

Thankfully my wish for a milder rest of January was largely granted, although far from tropical temperatures have remained largely above freezing, making it easier to get out and enjoy walks alone, with friends and of course with the dog. Although still remaining fairly local, while the wintery weather gives way to spring. I’ve enjoyed reading although progress slowed later in January.

It has however been replaced with music listening and YouTube watching. I’ve been somewhat addicted to watching the Médiocre Amateurs channel, although I’d consider what they do far from Amateur! I particularly enjoy the European ‘vacation’ videos which sees the gang take on Mont Balnc alongside some hefty multi day trails. I’ve been enjoying my usual eclectic mix of music too although I remind myself of the great album Tapestry by Carol King, it’s hard to pick a particular song as the entire album is incredible, I also enjoyed watching the 1971 concert at the BBC, again on YouTube, which was wonderful. Carols vocals are un matched, no need for additional processing just raw talent.

I hope at my next update, I’ll have some tales to tell of adventures I’ve had, however small. While also appreciating the small things just as my stroll around the park on my lunch at work.

Anyway, til next time. Take it easy.
